Is getting tested mandatory?
No. But recommended, for best results.
How often are gradings done?
Each term is 10 weeks long. At the end of each term those who are ready will go through a formal examination.
What if I was unable to attend a grading?
If you miss your grading you should get tested at the end of the following term.
In exceptional cases however, if sensei is satisfied that you had a valid reason for missing your exam, and if you communicated your limitations before the grading date, he may arrange for your grading to be done on another date before the next grading at the end of the term.
What are the grading fees?
Kids: $20 kyu grades
Adults: $25 kyu grades
Kids and adults: $50 black belt exams
Do I receive a belt when I pass my tests?
No. You should get your belt yourself.
If I happen to be away from training for a long period of time will I need to go through a belt exam again upon my return to training?
If your absence is longer than 3 months, and if you wish to wear your belt, yes. Black belts however are exempt from this rule.
Why are we charged for gradings and why is this charge not included in my tuition?
a. Grading fees are to cover the cost of extra time examiners will need to spend to make an assessment of your abilities/progress and produce a detailed report for you.
b. If grading fees were added to your tuition you would end up paying for exams even when you do not get tested.
c. Knowing that you will waste your money if you fail, chances are you will prepare for every grading that much more and, you will not get tested if you believe you are not ready.
