Kids Karate · Ages 4 to 12Confident kids are built.
Karate classes designed with the child in mind. Your child builds strong character, classical karate skill and self-defence in a positive, safe environment, and has a blast doing it.
Skills that carry over beyond the dojo.
We take a modern approach: self-defence and fitness training that is consistently fun for children of every experience level. Our instructors are highly trained and certified to bring out the best in your child, and their positive approach motivates kids to work hard and be the best version of themselves.
Kids learn karate through fun games and activities, so they reap the benefits while having a great time.
The benefits are endless. A few of them:
- Motor skills and muscle memory
- Confidence in themselves
- Respect for others
- Learning to say "No" to negative peer pressure
- Teamwork
- The power of goal setting
- Bully prevention teachings

Big energy. Little black belts.
For our youngest group we have developed exercises and games over the years that are specifically designed to teach valuable skills and be fun at the same time.
The focus is general fitness and athleticism, plus very basic karate techniques. Think the Balloon Game, bear walks, "Ninja attack (guards up!)" and stop-sign self-defence. L1 follows a junior grading syllabus: the road to yellow belt is broken into small steps, with coloured stripes on a white belt, so young kids see progress often. Junior black belt equals 9th kyu in the universal kyu system.
- Monday and Wednesday, 5:00 to 5:45 PM
- Parents stay in the building during class

Real karate. Real goals.
Classical karate and self-defence in a positive, safe environment.
Students build strong character and work through the kyu ranks from white belt toward black belt, with a belt exam at the end of every 3-month term. Sparring is part of the program: gloves and foot protectors are needed for sparring, and focus mitts for Sparring Skills and Fitness Kickboxing classes.
- Monday and Wednesday, 5:45 to 6:30 PM
- Belt exam every term
- Sparring gear needed for sparring classes
Something to earn every week.
Goal setting is built into every program. Each 3-month term starts with a goal and a plan.
Green stripe
Earned for extraordinary effort in class. L1 and L2.
Blue stripe
Earned for outstanding performance during training.
Red stripe
For breaking dojo etiquette or arriving consistently late.
Last Man Standing
The top 10 point earners each term face off. The winner goes home with a prize. Everyone starts fresh next term.
Tip-test, week 5 or 6
An informal mid-term check with instructor feedback. Earn 1 or 2 black stripes; at least one black stripe qualifies your child for the belt exam.
Belt exam & report card
Exams at the end of every term, with a second round about a month later for anyone who missed it. Report cards are prepared in the last week while the dojo rests.
Calmer. Sharper. Stronger.
Parents with kids in our classes report:
- Better self-discipline and self-control
- Better focus and ability to concentrate
- Better overall fitness and athleticism: strength, speed, flexibility
- More self-confidence
- A real understanding of goal setting and planning for success
- And much more
It is our philosophy to make learning fun. We want kids to look forward to every class, and we do everything we can to make that happen. Whether you are in Central Vancouver or nearby in Fairview, join us.
★★★★★My son has been training at Powerhouse for over six years, starting at the age of four, and the progress he's made has been outstanding. Under the expert guidance of Sensei Ramin, he has developed strong martial arts techniques, discipline, and self-confidence.
★★★★★As a mother, I highly recommend Powerhouse for all kids. Even though my son is attending for less than a year, I already noticed significant improvement, especially within his confidence. The instructors are making such a friendly, professional atmosphere for the kids and families where everyone seems happy and comfortable.
Families who kick together, stick together.
Every so often we invite parents to a family class. And the Parents Guide covers the rest.

- Get involved yourselfKids are far more motivated, and accept training as part of life, when they see you in a uniform too, even if you train less often. You will learn what your child does in class and can help them train at home.
